Atmosphere - Wiltern Theater - Los Angeles, CA

Paint the Nation gives LA a fresh new coat

It was all heartstrings and hoodies, as Minneapolis rap duo Atmosphere brought their Paint the Nation tour to the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday night. Tourmates Abstract Rude, DJ Rare Grooves and Blueprint warmed the stage—or was it a therapist's couch—with a bit of self-aware boom bap, before an unexpected three-song set from LA native Murs.

Performing a string of new material from their album, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, Slug and Ant worked together with their backing band for a high energy set that played like a thank you card to the audience for their gushing adoration. Looking less like undernourished indie rap outsiders and more like bona fide stars these days, Atmosphere is an example of an underground crew made good. So wipe those tears and keep spitting rhymes. It could happen to you.
